Renault 19 has been developed as a result of performance of program Х53 on creation of the car of the European middle class “М1”. Project realisation passed under the motto “Cars — in a life” and has occupied 42 months. Works on model creation have begun in November, 1984, and already after eight months, in July, 1985, the external design of the car has been definitively confirmed. During the following of 5 months the instrument panel has accepted the finished form. In April, 1986 works on internal furnish have been finished. Before start in a series in France in May, 1988, with a view of check and acknowledgement of correctness of the applied technical decisions, model pre-production models already наездили on ranges of 7,5 million kilometres.


Design Renault 19 has been developed by firm “Reno design” (“Renault Design”) in close cooperation with known Italian designer Dzhordzhio Dzhiudzharo. One of the primary goals put before designers and engineers, was to create the car with the best aerodynamics. Release, first of all, the sports version of model subsequently to use feature of a suspension bracket, brakes and aerodynamics of a body for serial models was planned.

Renault 19 with the smooth contours is "the thoroughbred" car, whose style was created on the basis of tests in a wind tunnel. The drains shipped in a roof and the external mirrors possessing good aerodynamics are with that end in view applied also.

The engine and transmission

The engine is located cross-section in front with an inclination in 12 back in the right part of a motor compartment (if to look in the direction of travel). This fastening provides effective suppression of vibration idling, decrease in noise of the engine on high turns and protects the engine from jolting at driving on bad road.


All updatings Renault 19 are equipped by transmissions of manufacture of "Reno" of type JB. It is a question of the transmission located cross-section with the easy metal case. Depending on model the transmission has 4 (type JBO) or 5 (type JB3) speeds. Transmission JB3 is calculated on higher twisting moment. Both types of transmissions are equipped by blocking of casual inclusion of transfer of a backing.

Suspension bracket

Passive safety

It along with ventilated forward disk brakes includes as well double, working depending on loading, terminators of brake effort on back brakes.
